This comes following a warning from the Met Office that there is ‘an increased likelihood of cold weather becoming established across all of the UK.     Following todays’ announcement- 11th September 2018- that Capita Gas Registration and Ancillary Services (CGRAS) – a division of Capita Plc – will continue to operate the official register of engineers licensed to undertake gas work on behalf of The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) under a 10-year Service Concession Agreement (SCA) which expires on 31 March 2019. CGRAS will continue its provision of the service having operated the Register since 2009 but with several service enhancements.

    Heating industry call for greater enforcement and strengthening of the Building Regulations for condensate pipes

    On 27th March 2018 representatives from across the heating industry met at the Heating and Hotwater Industry Council offices (HHIC), to review and discuss the matter of frozen condensate, which caused a high number of domestic boilers to stop working during the recent extreme weather that caused major disruption across the UK as a whole. The industry is now calling upon the government for greater enforcement and strengthening of building regulations.

    Heating industry statement on condensate pipes March 2018 in response to the widespread effects of the UK’s recent freezing weather conditions

    In 2005 the Government changed the Building Regulations so that only boilers of a certain high efficiency could be installed for both replacement and new installations, with regards to gas and oil boilers. This high efficiency can only be achieved using condensing technology, where the boiler extracts heat from the flue gases so the existing heat within is released and ‘recycled’ back into the water being heated in the boiler.
