Gas Safety Week 2025 - Day 6: Caring for the vulnerable – don’t overlook hidden gas dangers

When someone moves into a downstairs room for care reasons, it’s important to re-assess gas safety. For example, that room may have a gas fire which was not originally intended for constant use.

Gas fires must be properly installed, regularly serviced, and have suitable flueing arrangements.  Poor ventilation or old, unmaintained appliances can pose serious risks, especially to vulnerable individuals.  However, they do provide a really good source of heat.

If you’re a carer or family member:

  • Have the appliance checked by a Gas Safe engineer
  • Make sure ventilation is unblocked
  • Ensure a working CO alarm is in the room as per the latest regulations

A little attention can go a long way in protecting those most at risk.
